During sporting activities athletes can get hurt and encounter various musculoskeletal disorder and procedures which sport medicine encompasses. Ligament strains in the knee and ACL tears, labral tears and rotator cuff in the shoulder and runner’s knee also known as patellofemoral are some of the common sports injuries but they are not limited to.

The best solution is not always conventional orthopedic surgery, as athletes demand so much from their bodies. Musculoskeletal treatments have been revolutionized by minimal invasive procedures Arthroscopy which allows patients to recover from injuries in a short period of time. Some athletes can be back in training in as little as a month with the proper care and treatment.

Procedures in Sports medicine

Scooping knee which is also called knee arthroscopy is the most heavily used orthopedic method of treatment of sports injuries, as meniscus tears, ACL tears and removing broken pieces of cartilage or bone. The arthroscope is a camera which is used by the surgeon to view a joint in and innovative surgical procedure known as knee arthroscopy.  The surgeon is given a substantially increased vision by using the camera‘s fiber-optic technology which send images of the operation to a computer monitor.

This operation which does not require a large incision is one of the best benefits of arthroscopy against open surgery.  After the first incision the arthroscope is inserted into the knee joint by the surgeon so that he can get a detailed view of the knee structure. The surgeon then makes a second incision which he inserts pencil like instruments to remove and repair any bone present or any damaged cartilage.  As well as reducing scar in the operating area there is also less blood loss which includes shorter post operative recovery time no matter what joint was affected these are the other benefits of arthroscopy. The same technology which is used in knee arthroscopy is also used in shoulder arthroscopy which would repair cartilage, ligaments in the upper arm and damage to bone.  Labral tears and rotator cuff tears are two regular sports injuries that are successfully treated by using shoulder arthroscopy.

The minimally invasive methods are less painful to the tissue surrounding the shoulder therefore arthroscopy is used to treat these injuries. In other regular surgery for labrum tears and rotator cuff repair, the muscle can be separated from the shoulder.  The field of vision which is provided by the arthroscope is preferred by most shoulder surgeons.
