In this competitive society we are living in, almost everyone must indeed work hard until he breaks his back. It might sound abit exaggerated but it is actually not far from the truth. Recently, people nowadays are more determined and aggresive to the point of sacrificing one thing just to prove that they can accomplished something. But literally breaking one’s back is not a good point in proving that you can live through difficult conditions, instead, if you are not treating your back well enough, it might be the start of spinal cord disorders. The spinal cord, as fragile as it may seem, can be damaged in many ways which results in producing various symptoms of a spinal cord damage. There are various types of the disorders which the body will suffer severely as long as the spinal cord is exposed from any kinds of injury and trauma. Although the causes of such disorders are diverse, you can broadly classify its causes into two types : the traumatic and non-traumatic. In addition to trauma, the causes may probably due to autoimmune, infections, tumors and degenerative disorders. Few of the several types of spinal cord disorders are spinal cord injury, paralysis, spinal stenosis and paraplegia.

Spinal cord injury is simply the damage of spinal cord due to some direct trauma; paralysis which is the loss of motor function resulted from spinal cord dysfunction; paraplegia or the paralysis of legs in which sometimes the lower extremeties only. Spinal cord disorders in general, triggers agonizing pain, numbness, muscle spasms and fatigue or weakness. Cervical injuries which typically lead to complete or partial quadriplegia or a paralysis of the body from neck down affecting body functions such as breathing. Thoracic injuries, on the other hand, affect mostly the legs thus it only lead to paraplegia and impedes the bladder functioning. Lumbosacral injuries, furthermore, affects the bowel functioning as well as the sexual functioning. Lastly, infections, it is an inflammatory disorder which is most probably caused by trauma. Those are just some types of spinal cord disorder that are classified according to the affected nerve segment. When extensive loss of body function happens, it is best to start rehabilitation as soon as possible. Conditions like that are very devastating that you could not help by be depressed and a major drop of self-esteem.

Spinal cord can be very vulnerable to traumas, either in an accident, being compressed or destroyed or probably affected by certain diseases. Always keep yourself well informed and guided with all the risks in every activities you are about to partake, just like those bungee-jumping, sky-diving and other extreme activities that might cause some intense spinal cord disorder and injury. Besides, ignorance is not always a bliss. Think beforehand before you could even start regretting, prevention is still always better than cure. It has been proven for so long now but still people always try to break the norms which in return, all they’ve got are regret and complications of the many spinal cord disorders.
