There are lots of symptoms that are usually felt by a pregnant woman. Sometimes these can bring either confusion for an expectant mom, or it is just the normal adjustment of the body. One example is a kind of pain that is usually called round ligament pain. It is a pain that is felt in the abdomen and is usually common during pregnancy. This pain is caused by the changes that normally takes place during pregnancy.
A type of pelvic pain, round ligament pain happens when the round ligaments starts to stretch during pregnancy. It is commonly felt on the right side of the pelvic. Normally, the uterus is as small as a pear and a ligament called “round ligament” is the one responsible in holding it in suspension inside the abdomen. During pregnancy, your uterus will grow in size and as it grows, it increases its weight. Since there is an increase in weight, the round ligaments will then become very long and thin. Because of tension and stress, these ligaments will start to pull and tug some of the surrounding nerves and other sensitive structures, thereby causing pain. Though the pain felt can make a pregnant women get worried, this kind of pain is very normal.
How then can a pregnant woman know if the pain being felt is beyond the normal changes of pregnancy? It is important not to confuse round ligament pain with other pains that is caused beyond the normal changes of pregnancy. Symptoms that are considered beyond pregnancy can be more serious such as:
Appendicitis – a pain felt in the lower right abdomen which is caused by having inflamed appendix. As the inflammation progress, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, poor appetite and fever can be felt as the pain worsens. During pregnancy, appendicitis can be differentiated from round ligament pain when it is felt on the upper abdomen because of the growing uterus.
Cramps during pregnancy can be caused by slow digestion that usually occurs in the ascending colon and cecum, which is located on the right lower part of the abdomen.
Since that round ligament pain cannot be avoided during pregnancy, ways in managing the pain is recommended. To ease the pain, rest must be observed especially after having an extensive exercise. Changing positions occasionally will also help ease the pain. When the pain is felt while sitting, it can be alleviated by standing, and if you are already standing, bending or stretching can be done to manage the pain. Walking after experiencing the pain can help you alleviate the pain also. Application of heat has been always an effective way to ease different kinds of pain. Lastly, rubbing though very old fashioned, has never failed in easing the pain.
When such management couldn’t alleviate the pain, before you take any pain medications, it is best to seek for a medical attention. Knowing what kinds of medications that are safe during pregnancy is very crucial in order to avoid unwanted complications to the baby. Lastly, when feeling round ligament pain, it is just a sign that a woman on her pregnancy is progressing well.
