In most of the therapy clinics and centers today, therapists are bringing a new way to help patients who suffers from back pain, this is what they call Pilates exercises. What do we know about this exercise and how does this help those patients with back pain? According to some testimonies, patients who were introduced to this kind of exercise have verbalized its effectiveness in dealing with their back pain.

The secret of Pilates is that it is geared in addressing the underlying structural problems in the body that later on leads to a painful back. Problems like muscular imbalances, pelvic instability, lack of body awareness and lack of support, usually affects the back.

When it comes to posture, Pilates exercise is known to help patients correct their posture. In this kind of exercise, body’s alignment is given lots of attention. When the alignment of these body parts is off, especially on the spine, gives uneven stress to the bones. In Pilates, uniform muscle development and use is given an importance in order to allow movement flow through the body naturally.

When we talk about good posture, it is important to have that core strength to keep the body aligned. When we say core strength, it means that all of the trunk’s muscle are flexible, strong and are working in unison to provide stability and support to the spine. In many exercise that are usually done on the gym, most of them targets to strengthen the large muscles, which is different when it comes to Pilates. Here on this kind of exercise, the target is to train the body in such a way that all of the core muscles will work together in stabilizing and supporting the back. Knowing when to release and activate core muscles are ways in order to train the body, for effective core strength. We can really then say that this kind of exercise is essential in having a healthy back.

Flexibility is another thing that is promoted by Pilates. In order for a spine to be considered healthy, it should be able to do certain motions, such as curving backward and forward, moving side to side and twisting.  Increasing the potential range of motion of the spine by forming protective support, back muscles will then learn to work together with the abdominal muscles as the core strength is being developed.

Increased body awareness is another result which we can get from this exercise. When a back is felt, it only says that there is a problem, whether it is a result of inefficient movement habits or a poor posture. This way, it helps us become more aware of our body, especially the back.  This kind of awareness is of great help, especially to those having back pain. With pilates, it’s not only the physical functioning is improved but it also increased the awareness that we feel for our body. Because of these benefits that we can get with this exercise, there is no question why Pilates has  become popular to both therapist and patients.
