A physiatrist is a doctor of osteopathy or a medical doctor who is a specialist in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation also known as PM& R physicians.

They treat and diagnose musculoskeletal disorders and chronic and acute pain.  They offer non- surgical prevention and treatments and work in restoring functions lost due to illness or injury or a disabling condition.

Rehabilitation physicians are specialist of bone, muscle and nerve who treat illnesses and injuries that affects your movement.  Their training would be in the medical specialty physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

Tender muscles, tight, usually sore points in the shoulders, neck, back, knees, chest and hips are the characteristic of Fibromyalgia Syndrome.  This condition is often associated with depression, insomnia, migraine, restless legs syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis, cognitive dysfunction, mitral valve prolapsed and more.

Fibromyalgia is chronic.  FM though somewhat different accompanies Mofascial pain. Every organ of the body is a rigid bands or knot in the front that surrounds the muscle are the trigger points of Myofascial. Once identified as a syndrome chronic myofascial pain is a debilitating disease.  A brace may be prescribed or devices or drugs by the physiatrists.  Surgeries are not preformed by physiatrists. They use trigger point injections, massage, traction, therapeutic exercise, biofeedback, electrotherapies and other therapies including heat and cold.

Even if the condition is chronic the Physiatrist, physical medicine or fibromyalgia rehabilitation specialist’s aim is to offer the patients with techniques to improve their quality of life.  Each and every patient needs to identify they own specific rehabilitation treatment goal and each patient needs distinctive care.

Combinations of treatment procedures that are individualized for every patient are used by physiatrists.  Several of the following will be included in a treatment plan:

Medication; nutritional supplements; education on fibromyalgia and/or persistent myofascial pain; a pain management program (i.e., bioelectric therapy,  ultrasound, moist heat, and more); exercise (only after pain is decreased) which would be postural stretched, toning exercises,  postural stretches; therapy which is done manually with includes myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization, therapeutic massage, and adjustments; relaxation ( guided imagery, biofeedback, deep breathing exercises, Yoga, Tai Chi); home program – after having discovered what works best the patient will be required to follow through regularly on a home program.

You should always speak to your doctor before you start a new therapy or treatment regiment.  You can decide together what will be best for you.  You may need to speak to your doctor about physiatry and see how it will be able to benefit you.
