If you are experiencing some discomfort below your belly button or between your hips, then you are probably suffering from pelvic pain. It is considered chronic if the pain lasts more than six months but acute if the duration is less. This can sometimes be a symptom of another disease or a condition on its own. A doctor will perform examinations to find the cause of your pain and an effective way of dealing with it. This condition affects both men and women, but the underlying cause may differ between the sexes. In men pain is usually associated with a prostrate problem.

In women it may come about due to problems associated with your reproductive system such as endometriosis. This happens when your uterine tissue grows outside the uterus leading to painful cysts and adhesions. It may be due to spasms of pelvic floor muscles that cause recurring pelvic pain. Long term infections such as sexually transmitted diseases, may cause scars to your pelvic organs.  Diseases of the bowel such as irritable bowel syndrome lead to constipation, bloating or diarrhea which adds pressure and pain to the pelvic area. Psychological factors such as chronic stress, depression, physical or sexual abuse increase the likelihood of pain in the pelvic area.

Different symptoms are exhibited when it comes to chronic pelvic pain. You may experience dull aching, sharp pains, cramping during periods or pressure deep in your pelvis. The pain may be intermittent or you may have steady and severe pain. Other symptoms may include pain during bowel movement or while urinating, pain during intercourse or even when sitting down. The discomfort may amplify itself when you stand for long periods. Early diagnosis can be done to detect any anomalies to the reproductive system. These tests include urine and blood tests to check for infection signs, sexually transmitted infections test, pregnancy tests or pap tests to see if there is an indication of cervical cancer.

Treatment includes medications, in this case pain relievers. You should note that taking pain medication only may not solve chronic pelvic pain. Antibiotics may be prescribed if it has been shown that your pain is as a result of infection. Pain attributed to psychological factors can be relieved by using anti depressants and have been known to relieve pain in women who are not suffering from depression. Physical therapy may be recommended so as to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor. A physical therapist may apply cold and heat to your abdomen, massage sessions, and relaxation procedures to improve the chronic pain.

In the case of depression, physical or sexual abuse, the pain is intertwined with an emotional state. Therefore, counseling might be sought as part of a treatment plan. Electrical stimulation may be used to improve localized pain by interfering with the nerve pathway. If the specific pain point can be discovered, trigger point injections may be administered to ease discomfort and block pain. In extreme cases of chronic pelvic pain, surgery such as hysterectomy and laparoscopic surgery may be the last resort.
