Occupational therapy is a profession aimed at promoting a person’s health and well-being by engaging in occupation and performing value adding activities. It helps disabled and injured person gain independence in all areas of his life. It is believed that a person’s occupation has something to do with his overall health status. Thus, this profession is said to be indispensable as it has proven to level up the efficiency of employees while working. Now, this professions is becoming popular and in demand in some parts of the world.
The course
In the past years, to be able to take the licensure exam for occupational therapy, a bachelor’s degree is required. However, in 2007 the standard already changed. A master’s degree is needed to be able to take the licensure exam to be a qualified occupational therapist. Due to this change, a bachelor’s degree in OT is no longer offered by most universities. As an alternative, they offered a combined degree program: bachelor and master’s degree that would take up five years before completion. Still, there are other universities that design a curriculum for pre-occupational therapy course but most students preferred and enrolled in the combined program.

After completing the course, whether it is an associate degree or a combined program for occupational therapy, various occupations are waiting for the new occupational therapist.
Occupational Therapist Assistant
The main role is to assist the occupational therapist most especially in records keeping and ensuring that the treatment plan for each patient is strictly followed. They can secure employment in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s clinics and even in schools. This position requires a minimum educational attainment of associate degree but must pass a national exam to be registered as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant
Occupational Therapist
The main responsibilities shall include working with persons with physical, mental, emotional and developmental disability. The main aim is to improve patient’s personal and professional life’s quality and become independent. The occupational therapist will design a treatment plan solely for each patient suited for their needs. The treatment plan may range from improving motor skills to teaching life skills with the aid of different activities, games and adaptive equipment. Like the occupational therapist assistant, they can also be found working in hospitals, schools, nursing home and in mental health institutions. Educational attainment required would include an internship program, a master’s degree in occupational therapy and must pass the licensure exam. This exam varies depending on the state they come from.
Medical and Health Services manager
In large settings, the position is tasked to create policies and procedures relative to medical and health services; managed the allotted budget and supervise the work of the occupational therapist and assistant. Those occupational therapists with extensive experience may qualify for this position as advancement for their career. It is expected that employment rate in this field will soon start to grow in the near future. Thus, those well experienced occupational therapists can look forward to this for career growth and development.
Occupational therapy is just not a profession but a vocation as well since its aim is to make life better for those who suffered from an injury and people with disabilities.
