Neck Pain is a feeling of either light or severe discomfort within the neck area.  This usually affects the nerves and muscles and usually brings pain up to the spinal cord of the person.

The usual neck pain that a human suffers from is the one that we call stiff neck.  Stiff neck is described as difficulty of moving your neck from side to side.  Severe neck pain may lead to numbness and tingling of arms, hands and some other parts of the body.

What are the probable causes of neck pain?

One of the many causes of neck pain is strained or tensioned muscles. And this particular cause usually results from the typical day to day activities like being in front of your computer for long hours, keeping a bad posture or a slouching position while watching TV or reading or resting, TV or comp0uter monitors might be positioned too high or too low, having slept in the wrong side of the bed or maybe due to abrupt movement of neck.

Severe cases might have been due to a traumatic accident which may have caused the injury.  Other causes of neck pain are the following:

  • Fibromyalgia, a certain medical condition
  • Cervical arthritis
  • Dislocated disk
  • Minimal spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis
  • Tensioned spine
  • Spinal infection
  • Cancer which has a spine involvement
For minor neck pains, rehabilitation can be done at home. Home remedies include the following:
  • You can take pain relievers that you can buy over-the-counter like Advil and Tylenol.
  • Do either hot or cold compress procedure on the affected area.  It is advisable for you to do the cold compress using an ice bag for the first 48 to 72 hours than afterwards, do the hot compress procedure on the same area.
  • Refrain from doing heavy and vigorous physical activity during the initial days of bearing the pain.  This will help you get relaxed and relieve the symptoms of the inflammation.
  • Do everything slowly but surely.  Do not move in a very abrupt manner.
  • Have someone to give you a very gentle massage on the affected area.
  • Try to sleep in a firm bed without using a pillow or with an ergonomically designed neck pillow.
Despite the many causes of neck pain, such inflammation can be avoided.  How can we prevent acquiring neck pain?
  • Make sure to perform regular exercise that would bring relaxation to your neck.
  • Learn some stretching moves intended for you upper extremities especially for your neck.  Do these moves as regularly as possible for a stress free working day.
  • Always keep a good posture even when just doing nothing.  Always keep you spinal vertebrae supported.
  • Stretch your neck once in a while when working with computers.
  • If possible, use a headset every single time you talk over the phone.
  • When typing a document, place a document in level with your eyes.
  • Try to evaluate your sleeping position.  You might be sleeping at the wrong side of the bed at all times.
  • Always buckle up when in a vehicle to keep yourself supported in case of accidents.
