Living your day to day life can be problematic if you are suffering from pain and that is why neck pain management offers a solution. Neck pain is normally associated with medical conditions and can come about due to diseases or disorders that affect the neck tissue. Examples of such conditions include neck injury, neck strain, degenerative disc disease, pinched nerves, poor posture or a herniated disc. It can also come about due to viral infections of the throat that lead to swelling of the lymph gland. Fibromyalgia affects muscles of the neck and can result in neck pain.

Dull aches are associated with neck pain and may be increased through movement of the neck. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing, dizziness, tenderness and shooting pain, gland swelling and numbness. Headaches and shoulder pain come as a result of pinched nerves and neck pain management aims to alleviate these symptoms. In some cases, neck pain may be accompanied by upper back pain or lower back pain. Diagnosis of neck pain includes having X-rays, CT scanning, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which reveals neural elements and Electromyography (EMG) that is used to diagnose tingling and numbness.

Neck pain management involves the use of non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs such as Motrin, Aleve and Tylenol. They are valuable analgesics that do not cause nausea, respiratory depression or alter cognitive functions of the patient. Antidepressants have been shown to effectively deal with neuropathic pain and migraine headache, while muscle relaxers deal with the origin of the pain. They affect the relay between your brain and the central nervous system acting as sedatives resulting in the relaxing of muscles. You can also treat neck pain by applying ice or moist heat locally on the problematic area. Sometimes you may even alternate from ice to heat in repeated cycles so as to reduce the inflammation and pain.

Another neck pain management method is exercising. Incorporate strengthening and stretching exercises to keep your neck flexible and strong as well as preventing stiffness. Massaging the area helps blood flow and relieves pain, although care should be taken not to massage the neck area if it causes pain. Non prescription creams also provide relief from pain. For radiating pain that may affect the shoulder, as in the case of shoulder arthritis, a corticosteroid injection may be helpful. Habits such as sitting for long periods in front of a computer may cause neck pain and you will need to change or avoid such activities.

Prevention is always better than seeking medical intervention. Therefore, effective prevention strategies are needed such as avoiding slouching and sitting for long periods without changing positions. When sleeping, use a pillow that maintains your neck in a straight position. Avoid sleeping on your stomach with your neck bent or twisted. Relaxation exercises help reduce stress that may be adding to your neck pain while practicing neck exercises at least once a day protects and strengthens your neck. It is important to learn how to prevent hurting your neck and neck pain management offers lasting solutions.
