MRI clinics perform tests that show images of the body structure and organs by using radio wave energy pulses and magnetic fields. This is what is known as Magnetic Resonance Imaging and it does not use radiation. The MRI scanner is a large magnet that is doughnut shaped and has a tunnel at the center. There is a table where the patient lies and it is then slid into the tunnel. Some clinics have open MRI machines which have larger openings so that even patients who are claustrophobic can be able to access their services.
The atoms in the body are usually manipulated by the radio waves and sent to a computer which gives clear black and white images that can be converted into three dimensional images. This allows for an accurate location of the cause of the pain. MRI clinics perform this procedure to detect problems affecting the spinal cord, skeleton, abdomen, brain, chest and lungs. It helps in giving images in areas where other diagnostics tests such as X-ray, ultrasound or CAT scans cannot. These areas include the ears, eyes, heart and the circulatory system. Highlighting contrasts in soft tissue allows it to decipher problems associated with cartilage, tendons, joints and ligaments.
No special preparation is needed before going for an MRI. However, the doctor may need to have some information such as recent surgeries, pregnancy, allergic reaction to any medication, if you have an artificial limb, pacemaker or metal clips in your body. You are not allowed to have electronic or metallic devices when entering the MRI room as these have been known to interfere with the magnetic field. Dental fillings and braces do not cause any interference. To get quality MRI images, you need to lie completely still. However, this may not be possible when dealing with children or claustrophobic patients. Oral sedatives may be taken on your way to MRI clinics to ease anxiety or at the clinic to induce sleep.
The procedure takes as little as twenty or as much as ninety minutes to perform, depending on the study. A solution may be administered through an intravenous line so as to help in contrasting and show specific problems. The solution is safe, painless and rarely is there an allergic reaction. Some sounds may be heard in while in the machine and some MRI clinics provide earplugs or headphones so as to cancel out the noise. If you are under sedation, the oxygen, breathing and heart beat levels will be monitored. Once the examination is over, you will be directed to a recovery area.
There are no harmful risks related to having an MRI test. The iron pigments present in tattooed eyeliner or tattoos may cause eye or skin irritation. When under sedation, your breathing may slow down but this will always be monitored. Tell your doctor if you have any medication patches on, as some have been known to cause burns. The images are viewed by a radiologist and the initial results can be discussed with you immediately after the test. In most MRI clinics the complete results will be available to your doctor in one to two days.
